Prolific Michigan-based architect Ray Hearn was kind enough to join me on a call to answer some of my questions about several of his ongoing renovations at a few smaller clubs and public courses in Michigan, clubs that are in his words, taking "baby steps" to enhance their courses and embrace some of the design philosophies of Golden Age golf architects.
Every time I’ve played on one of Mr Hearns designs, it’s been a memorable round. A lot of them usually don’t break the bank either. Sounds like Washtenaw might be worth the drive down to AA. This was a great listen.
Thanks! Washtenaw is always enjoyable, mostly due to the greens and almost always having a recovery option if you go wayward. The 8th hole in particular is an oddity that feels like it shouldn’t work, but is one of the most fun on the course. As for Ray’s original work, I think you are right. Only Moose Ridge stands out as one that I don’t particularly like, nor do I think it has good value.
Do you think Moose ridge is redeemable though? I feel some of the holes would be better a few tee boxes shorter. I wish I’d thought of that question before the interview. 🤣
Some Moose Ridge problems are on ownership, like conditioning matching up with pricing. Some problems could be resolved with some updates to mowing lines. Others would involve tree removal to widen corridors and improve playing options. That is trickier, and would negatively impact pricing. All doable, but progressively less palatable.

I really enjoyed your discussion with Ray. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
I can't find you on X anymore? Do you still post there?
No X… unless you count my burner account that I occasionally use to log in and see something.
