I thought that once I made it through July, things would slow down a little bit. August would be my month for checking back in, catching up, and getting back into a rhythm. Instead, I took nearly a month off from the newsletter. Best laid plans and whatnot.
Regular readers of the newsletter are likely familiar with my #MIGolfCourseAerialOfTheDay feature each Monday through Friday on my social channels. If not, it’s an incredibly easy thing to describe.
In the morning, I post something like this.
I then give you until 3pm to make a guess at which course it is, before revealing the course name, maybe the architect, rates, or some history. In this case, it’s Bird Creek in Port Austin, it’s a 1989 Bruce Matthews III design, and $40-$65. And the regulars tell me things like, “it’s pretty fun” or “Not bad, but Verona Hills is the best course in the thumb.”
Hopefully you get the picture.
I’ve tried summarizing the posts at the end of the year, doing things like top 50 lists of the courses that receive the most engagement. You can also go back through the history of the posts and see all of the course info right away. But I’ve never put a bunch of the features together into one collection, allowing you to look through a lot of courses in one sitting in an organized fashion.
If you are still with me, hopefully by now you are asking, “Wait, did you put a bunch of features together into one PDF, and did you also organize the courses by region?!”
Listen, I somehow spent way too much time on this, while simultaneously not spending enough time on it. It’s dominated my last few weeks, and yet could likely use more care on things like formatting and organization. The result is something that looks like this sample page.
I have worked quickly on this for good reason, however. This fall I will be participating in the 100-Hole Golf Marathon to benefit the First Tee of Greater Detroit. I have a donation page and everything.
This will be my second time participating. Rather than spending August trying to solicit individual donations for the event, I’ve instead dedicated most of my time to producing this 113-page PDF, showcasing 103 different courses that were featured on my account between spring of 2023 and late summer 2024. While I’ve always offered everything that I have done for free, this time my intent was always to raise some money for the fine folks, and kids, at the First Tee.
So here’s the deal - make a pledge of any amount at my donation page, you name the price, and you will get access to the PDF download*. You will also have my gratitude. You had it already for reading the newsletter, but now you have even more!
And you will get a bunch of features. Like this one.
*By me sending you an e-mail with a link. I run a very analog operation, so it might take a little bit for me to get it to you, but get it to you I will.
I can’t promise a regular schedule during this, my busy season. But I will be back to sharing more stories and deep dives in the coming weeks.
For now, please consider donating. Please take a look at the PDF. And most importantly, if you want to see more summaries like this in the future, featuring new courses and aerials, let me know what you like and don’t like in this edition.
