Welcome to Great Lakes Loops. Shout out to “eurofan” on The Refuge for the name suggestion!
After calling Michigan home for all of my life, I moved to Chicago (like all Midwesterners trying to start a career) for a period of time. Recently (2020) I moved back to Michigan, and rediscovered how much easier it is to golf here than it is in Chicago! Sadly, with all of the great golf in the state, I don’t think the quality of the golf media coverage has kept up with the quality of the golf. That’s not to say anything bad about those who are currently the “leaders” in Michigan golf coverage. I’m sure they are doing their best, but the modern game deserves modern coverage.
As I’m in the early stages of getting Great Lakes Loops off the ground, this newsletter will serve as a medium for keeping up with what I am working on. My goal is to produce plenty of video content, which will be hosted on YouTube and Instagram (@greatlakesloops), and Twitter maybe (@the_CLV)? I’ll have written content as I look for great stories throughout the state, hosted here and anywhere else that is interested (The Golfer’s Journal, The Fried Egg, etc.). And if I’m feeling ambitious and the content makes sense, perhaps there will be a podcast.
If you’re not familiar with my background in golf media, that’s because I have none. That is, of course, if you don’t count my history in the virtual golf design community (TGCTours.com), which is a topic that you may see here occasionally if I’m working on a particularly intersting project. Otherwise, I was previously pursuing a career in coaching basketball, with stops working for Eastern Michigan basketball and the Detroit Pistons, before realizing that if I wanted a family and a sane life, the coaching lifestyle wasn’t going to be it for me.
As I learn what I’m doing, I’ll try to document everything and make sure I particularly highlight every single dumb mistake I make, and just maybe you will witness me making gradual improvements, too. Hopefully my golf media journey will be entertaining, if nothing else, but also I’m interested in elevating the people and places doing great things in the state. If I can help anyone else along during this process, I’ll absolutely try my best. I can’t remember who said, but I most certainly want to be someone who lowers the ladder down behind me, rather than pulling it up behind me.
Sign up now, and feel free to reach out at any time if you have a great story idea!
In the meantime, tell your friends! (<—— I don’t know what this link does, but it was autogenerated by Substack so it has to be important and good.)
